Here's where the trail starts.
You can just follow me, Moenkopi!
In case you can't read the sign, here's a close up.
As you can see, the bottom part of Red Butte is made up of rocks from the
Moenkopi Formation.

Red Butte is one of the biggest Moenkopi outcrops on the South Rim. To the left, you can see how it looks not far from my home. At right, it's the little bump on the horizon of the South Rim, as seen from Bright Angel Point on the North Rim. Can you see it?

Red Butte Trail climbs almost 900 feet to the highest point.
The trail is full of "switch backs" and takes about
1 1/2 miles to get to the top.
I can do it because
I'm a BIG PUPPY now.
I'm 11 1/2 weeks old and weigh 23 pounds!

That Dr. D is sure a slow hiker. Hurry up Dr. D!

See how RED the Moenkopi rocks are on the way up!
Just like ME!

The red rocks just below the top are "Shinarump". That's a very
funny word!
Looks like someone is carving an old man face (right picture). Scary!

Ah the top at last!

Say, you can see pretty far from here!
At left, you can
see the North Rim peakin' up
above the Northern horizon.
Do you see it?
At right, home is to the South!
(We live at the base of the
peaks)

It's fun to walk around up here!

There's lots of "Mormon Tea" (Ephedra).

And "Pinyon Pine"

And there's this old fire lookout station too!

But the best stuff is always in the dirt!
(At right, I'm practicing my sheepish look,
so Dr. D won't make
me quit playing in the dirt.
Pretty good, huh!)

Too bad we had to walk ALL THE WAY back down!
I'm too tired to get in the Jeep!
Somebody
pick me up, ok?

That's better!
Sure glad I don't have to drive home!
